Medical Imaging is the method and process of making digital visual representations of an internal body organ or tissue for diagnosis and therapeutic intervention, and also a visual representation of some parts of an internal body part or organ as well. Medical Imaging uses a variety of imaging methods to create visual representations of body parts, such as brain scans, x-rays, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In the past, these techniques used mechanical apparatus like stereophotographs and x-ray tubes, which had limitations in image clarity and size. Today, with the use of digital imaging techniques, physicians and hospitals can create clear images of internal organs and tissues with greater resolution and more detail.

This type of technology is not new, and has been around since the 1970s when digital image software was created by IBM and Hewlett-Packard. Today, the entire imaging process is done with the use of digital imaging software. The main benefit of using medical imaging software is that it is less invasive than the traditional methods which required the patient to lie on a table and have an image taken. This enables doctors to view images immediately, which can make a big difference to the treatment plan. Digital imaging software helps to produce images of any size and which are detailed enough to determine tissue damage, disease and infection. This in turn means that doctors can tailor their treatment more specifically for each patient to improve their chances of recovery.
